Embedded Fintech

Overview

Toast Checking is a financial product designed for restaurant operators to simplify cash flow management by combining their operating account with built-in automation for taxes, payroll and expense allocation.

As part of an embedded partnership with Toast POS, I led partner strategy and product positioning for the sales jar within the checking account.

The Problem

Restaurant financial operations are fragmented and highly manual.

Operators often manage revenue, taxes, payroll and vendor payments across disconnected systems and accounts, creating unnecessary operational overhead and limited visibility into usable cash flow.

Even with modern POS infrastructure, financial operations remained separated from the day-to-day rhythm of running a restaurant.

Key friction points included:

Manual tax allocation and savings management
Limited real-time visibility into operating cash

Insight

Restaurant operators weren’t looking for additional financial tools.

They wanted financial operations to happen automatically in the background so they could focus on service, staffing and day-to-day operations.

The strongest operator needs centered around:

Predictability
Simplicity
Trust in automation
Reduced operational oversight

The opportunity was embedding financial workflows directly into restaurant operations.

Partnership & Positioning Strategy

Reframing the Product Narrative from:

“business checking account”

to:

“embedded financial operations layer for restaurants”

This reframing moved the conversation away from traditional banking features and toward operational outcomes tied to daily restaurant workflows.

Cross-Functional Alignment

Worked across product, partner and GTM teams to ensure consistency:

Aligned internal language with external messaging
Helped translate product functionality into operator-facing language
Ensured partner positioning reflected real restaurant use cases

Embedded Partnership Alignment

Supported alignment between Toast POS workflows and financial product positioning to ensure the experience felt operationally integrated rather than additive.

This included helping:

Align internal and external messaging across teams
Translate product capabilities into restaurant-specific use cases
Ensure partner positioning reflected real operational behavior
Reinforce consistency across partner touchpoints inside the Toast ecosystem

Outcome

The work helped strengthen how Toast Checking was understood within the restaurant ecosystem:

Clearer differentiation from traditional business banking products
Stronger alignment between product functionality and operator workflows
More consistent positioning across partner and product touchpoints
Simpler, more operationally grounded messaging for restaurant operators

Most importantly, the product narrative evolved from a standalone financial product into a more embedded restaurant operations experience.
